In the three qualifying rounds and the play-off stage, teams play two matches against each other on a home-and-away basis.
The clubs were split into 12 groups of four teams playing home and away against each of their pool opponents between September and December to decide which two teams from each section advance to the first knockout round.
Knockout StageEditThe top 2 teams from each group are joined by the 8 third-place finishers (indicated by ³) from each group of the UEFA Champions League to form a 32 team knockout stage. Each team play two matches against each other on a home-and-away basis.
